The headline numbers on the Forward Deployed Engineer role are real, and they're enormous. But the spread is what matters — because "FDE" now covers a mid-level IC at an enterprise and a principal at a frontier lab, and those two people live in different economies.

The bands, from the ground up. Median base sits around $205K. Mid-level total comp lands near $385K, staff around $610K, and at the top of the market — senior FDEs at Anthropic and OpenAI — packages clear $785K, with principals reported past $1.2M. Across ~1,200 FDEs the average total comp is roughly $238K, spanning $205K entry to $486K senior.

Equity is the whole story at the top. At frontier labs, equity is now 55–70% of total compensation, up from 35–45% in 2024. That's the difference between Palantir's classic FDSE (cash-heavy, ~$211K median TC) and an OpenAI FDE at $350–550K — the gap is almost entirely stock. Read an offer by its equity terms or you're not reading it at all.

Geography bends the number, tax bends it back. London runs £80–140K, Paris ~€67K base, Singapore ~$150K — all below US bands. But the Gulf pays ~$100K tax-free, which lands closer to a taxed $140–160K in take-home. Where you sit changes the headline; how it's taxed changes the reality.
